We are not a national franchise or a kit reseller. We are a local Asheville sauna contractor with real roots in Western North Carolina.
Every sauna we install is designed and built for your specific space. We do not sell kits or pre-fabricated boxes. We start with your room dimensions, your goals, and your budget, and we build something that fits perfectly and lasts for decades. No two builds are exactly the same.
Mountain climates demand different construction standards than coastal or desert markets. We build with proper insulation, vapor barriers, and wood species that hold up to Asheville's humidity, cold winters, and year-round temperature swings. Your sauna will perform just as well in January as it does in July.
We source premium Western red cedar and hemlock for every build. These woods are naturally resistant to moisture and bacteria, hold heat evenly, and develop a rich character over time. When you step into one of our saunas, you can feel and smell the difference quality materials make.
From the first consultation through the final walkthrough, we manage every detail. That includes design, permitting, material ordering, construction, electrical coordination, and post-install support. You do not have to coordinate multiple contractors or track down materials. We handle it all so you can focus on looking forward to your first session.
The Process
Our installation process is designed to be clear, low-stress, and fully managed from start to finish.
We start with a free in-home or virtual consultation. We visit your space, discuss your vision, walk through sauna types and materials, and answer every question you have before any commitment is made. This is where we figure out exactly what you want.
Our team creates a custom layout and design plan specific to your space. You review and approve dimensions, wood selection, heater type, benching layout, lighting, and any custom features before we proceed. Nothing moves forward until you are fully satisfied with the design.
We handle the permitting process with the City of Asheville and Buncombe County on your behalf. Our team knows local codes and inspection requirements, so you do not have to navigate the permit process yourself. We keep you informed throughout so there are no surprises.
Our crew arrives on the scheduled build date and completes your sauna installation with full attention to detail. We use licensed electricians for all wiring and coordinate all trades so the job flows smoothly. Most residential builds are completed within one to three days depending on complexity.
Before we leave, we walk you through your completed sauna from top to bottom. We cover how to operate your heater, maintenance best practices, how to season the wood if needed, and what to expect as your sauna breaks in. You leave the walkthrough completely confident in your new investment.
Our Work
Every sauna we build is designed from scratch and photographed on-site. These are real custom installations completed by our Asheville team.
Client Reviews
These are real reviews from real clients across the Asheville area.
"We had a four-person cedar sauna built in our basement last winter. The team was knowledgeable about mountain climate builds and used proper insulation I would not have known to ask for. It has been running every night since October and holds heat perfectly."
"We hike almost every weekend and wanted a sauna for recovery. They built a freestanding outdoor sauna on our back deck with hemlock benching and a wood-burning option. The craftsmanship is excellent and it fits the property perfectly. Very straightforward to work with from start to finish."
"They handled the whole project including the permits and the electrical sub. The infrared sauna in our master bath came out better than we pictured it. It was done in two days and everything works exactly as described. We use it three or four times a week."
Asheville Custom Saunas is a locally operated custom sauna builder and installer serving Asheville, NC and surrounding Western North Carolina communities. We design and build custom indoor saunas, outdoor saunas, infrared saunas, steam rooms, and commercial sauna installations from scratch. Every project is managed in-house from consultation through final walkthrough.
Custom sauna pricing in Asheville typically ranges from $8,000 to $35,000 or more depending on the type, size, materials, and complexity of the installation. A small two-person indoor sauna with standard cedar will sit at the lower end of that range. A large outdoor sauna with premium hemlock, custom benching, and a high-output heater will be higher. We provide detailed quotes after the free consultation so you know exactly what to expect.
Most residential sauna installations in Asheville take one to three days of active construction once the design is finalized and materials are on-site. The total project timeline from initial consultation to completed installation is typically three to six weeks, which includes design approval, material procurement, permitting if required, and scheduling. We give you a clear timeline at the start and keep you updated throughout.
We install six types of saunas in Asheville: custom indoor saunas, freestanding outdoor saunas and barrel saunas, infrared saunas, steam rooms, commercial saunas for spas and wellness businesses, and pre-built sauna kit installation. All builds except pre-built installs are designed and constructed from scratch to your specifications.
Asheville is surrounded by some of the best hiking and outdoor trails in the Southeast, and regular sauna use complements an active mountain lifestyle extremely well. Heat therapy accelerates muscle recovery, reduces inflammation, and improves circulation after long trail days. Many of our clients use their saunas within an hour of returning from a hike on the Appalachian Trail or in the Pisgah National Forest. The combination of Asheville's outdoor culture and a home sauna is a natural fit.
The easiest way to get started is to call us at (828) 752-8223 or fill out the contact form on our website. We will schedule a free in-home consultation at your convenience. During that visit, we assess your space, walk through your options, and answer every question before any commitment is made. There is no pressure and no obligation to proceed after the consultation.
We primarily build with Western red cedar and hemlock, both of which are ideal for sauna environments. Cedar is naturally antimicrobial, aromatic, and handles heat and humidity exceptionally well. Hemlock is a smoother, lighter-toned wood that is a great alternative for clients who prefer a cleaner aesthetic. We also source Nordic spruce for specialty builds. All framing and structural work uses materials appropriate for high-heat, high-humidity environments.
In most cases, yes. Sauna installations in Asheville and Buncombe County that involve electrical work, structural changes, or new construction typically require a permit. We handle the permitting process on your behalf as part of our full-service installation. Our team is familiar with local building codes and inspection requirements, so this step is managed for you without added stress or delays.
A traditional sauna heats the air inside the room to temperatures between 160 and 195 degrees Fahrenheit using an electric or wood-burning heater. An infrared sauna uses radiant heat panels to warm the body directly at lower air temperatures, typically between 120 and 150 degrees. Traditional saunas deliver the classic high-heat experience with optional steam from pouring water on hot rocks. Infrared saunas are gentler, easier to tolerate for longer sessions, and more energy-efficient. Both are excellent options depending on your goals and preferences.
Yes. We install commercial saunas for spas, wellness centers, hotels, gyms, and corporate offices throughout the Asheville area. Commercial builds use heavier-duty materials and heaters rated for high-volume use. We design to commercial code and handle all permitting and inspections. Asheville's growing wellness and hospitality industries have made commercial sauna installations one of our busiest segments.
Custom sauna maintenance is straightforward. After each use, leave the door open to air out the room and allow moisture to escape. Wipe down benches with a dry cloth after sweaty sessions and do a light clean with a diluted wood cleaner monthly. Sand the benches lightly once a year to refresh the wood surface. Avoid using oils, varnishes, or chemical cleaners on sauna wood. We cover all of this during the post-installation walkthrough and are always available if questions come up later.
Sauna size depends on how many people will be using it regularly and how much space you have available. A two-person sauna typically fits in a 4x6 foot footprint. A four-person sauna comfortably fits in a 6x8 foot space. Larger family or social saunas may range from 8x10 feet and up. We assess your available space during the consultation and recommend the right size to match your usage needs and budget without wasting square footage.
